Summer is officially here and that means it’s time for fresh Michigan fruits and vegetables, and lively downtown farmers’ markets.

The Michigan Aging and Adult Services Agency (AASA) has recently launched a new program for farmers and market visitors age 60 and up. The Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program, known as Senior Project FRESH/Market FRESH, provides $20 in farmers’ market coupons to those who have a total household income of 185 percent of poverty or less (locate your eligibility here). The coupons are valid until October 31st, and allow shoppers to purchase Michigan-grown fruits and vegetables at registered roadside stands and farmers’ markets.

The coupons are distributed as ten $2.00 vouchers which function as money, and can pay for Michigan-grown, non-processed produce. The list of eligible items can be accessed at this link and includes types of fruit, vegetables, spices, mushrooms, honey and more. The coupons may be redeemed at registered farmers’ markets and roadside stands which will display a sign that reads, “Senior Project FRESH/Market FRESH Welcome Here”. The program is free for both eligible residents and the Michigan farmers who participate!

To receive your coupons, you must contact the program’s local lead agency to apply for the program. If you are a farmer who would like to get involved you can also contact the agency. In Livingston County, the contact to receive your vouchers is Allison Krys-Kelley at Oakland Livingston Human Services Agency, located at  2300 E Grand River, Suite 107 in Howell, or by phone at (517) 546-8500.
