Things to Keep in Mind When Applying for Veterans BenefitsAs a veteran, it’s important that you are receiving all of the benefits that you are entitled to. Disability benefits are crucial for vets suffering from physical or mental conditions. Applying for benefits can be a daunting process. An attorney who is experienced in working with veteran benefits can be a huge help, and ensure that you are getting all of your benefits and compensation.

There are several ways to apply for disability benefits. You can apply online, by mail, by phone, or visit the local VA office. When filling out the application, you have to list the injuries and illnesses for which you are requesting compensation. Make sure to be specific and thorough. Provide dates and list symptoms. Keep in mind that the more disabilities you list, the longer it takes to process your claim. List only the disabilities that are causing symptoms and/or for which you have been diagnosed by a doctor. If you have medical records to support your claim you can send them, but if you don’t the Veterans Benefits Association will request them for you.

Processing your claim and receiving a decision from the VA can take anywhere from a few months to a few years. You can reduce this time by using the “Fast Track” program. This allows you to speed up the processing time by submitting all of your medical records along with the application. You have up to a year to submit the records, but it’s best to send them in as fast as you can.

Throughout the claims process, make sure you are keeping track of all critical documents (if you have an attorney he or she can do this for you). You particularly want to make sure you retain all evidence related to your claims (e.g. statements from doctors or the VA, medical diagnoses, etc.).
