What is the PACE Program?
Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly or “PACE” is a program offered to Medicare and Medicaid recipients which helps them address their health and other medical issues while living in their community. The focus of this program is to allow seniors who need these services to remain in their homes rather than having to move to a place such as an assisted living facility or nursing home.
How Does the PACE Program Work?
The PACE program involves different types of care providers who may serve the client in their home, through a dedicated PACE office, or through providers and specialist in the community. Those who choose to accept PACE services may be directed to specialist including doctors who have been identified as PACE preferred. An individual’s PACE team could consist of specialists such as doctors, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, and therapists. All those providing care and services to a client are considered part of a team whose focus is meeting their client’s health needs while allowing them to remain in the community and home they love.
What Services are Covered by PACE?
PACE includes all Medicare and Medicaid covered services and other services which will be determined by the recipient’s treatment team. This means that if your treating specialist decides that you need a particular service, it may be covered by PACE even if it would not ordinarily be covered under Medicare or Medicaid. This coverage may include services such as adult day services, meals, dental, laboratory services, specialized medical services, as well as hospital and home services.
Who is Eligible for PACE?
People who wish to enroll in the PACE program can do so through Medicare or Medicaid. They must also be medically qualified meaning they must meet Medicaid’s long-term care eligibility criteria. The individuals who use this program must be at least 55 years old and live in an area approved for PACE coverage. Those seeking enrollment must also be living in the community rather than an assisted living or nursing home environment when they are enrolled. There are also prohibitions regarding program participants being enrolled in Medicaid MIChoice waiver and a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) at the same time as the PACE program.
