Healthy Living During the Holiday Season

The holidays can be a festive and happy time of year when we connect with family and friends and enjoy celebrating.  It is also a time when we want to be in the best of health so we can take part in all of the different activities going on around us.  Here are some healthy living tips to consider which can help you remain well while getting the most out of the season.

Eating Smart and Eating Well

It may not come as a surprise that the holidays can be a time when many people abandon their usual diets and indulge in their favorite seasonal foods.  Plus, there can be many occasions to partake of treats which are delightful to eat but not particularly healthy.  While it is perfectly fine to enjoy special foods, it is also essential to maintain balance.  For instance, if you know you are going to a party and plan to eat sugary or high-fat foods, do your best to eat healthy meals beforehand and the following day.  Additionally, make sure that when you are enjoying holiday foods that you include some nutritional items such as a steamed vegetable or salad.  You can also avoid overindulging by using a smaller plate or limiting your number of servings.

Keep Your Immune System Happy

While this time of year can bring merriment, it can also bring germs, colds, and viruses.  Holiday activity can mean having contact with more people and being out in public more often.  Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water frequently.  Also, the fun of the holidays can come with stress.  Stress on the body can make your immune system vulnerable.  Try to minimize stressors and develop ways to deal with tension.   For instance, if large crowds make you feel uncomfortable, try to go out at less popular times.  If you find yourself reacting to stress, practice deep breathing exercises.

Incorporate Exercise

Exercise is a powerful way to keep your body and mind healthy.  With all of the places to go and things to do during the holidays it can be easy to put off your exercise routine.   If you are too busy to make it to your favorite exercise class or to the gym, select holiday activities which include walking or being active.  For instance, you could ask loved ones to go for a walk with you after a meal.  You could also choose to park further away from a holiday attraction and get in more steps for the day.
