The VA Center for Innovation has introduced a new solution to help Veterans with a variety of different physical needs. The use of 3D printing has allowed for quick and cost-effective means to assist Veterans in need.

3D printers are machines that create physical objects by layering thin strips of material on top of each other until a complete shape is formed. Any design can be shared to the printer, so creating specific tools and devices for each person’s individual need is made simple.

So far, five 3D printers have been installed in VA hospitals across the country. They have printed a custom-fit hand splint to help an outdoorsman get back to his axe and a modified wheelchair joystick to provide accessible mobility. The VA hope to acquire 3D printers for all 168 VA hospitals and improve the lives of many more Veterans in need.
